XVI th JP Atray Memorial Cricket Tournament from 17-30 September 2009

CHANDIGARH, Monday, Sep 14, 2009


As many as 16 teams will take part during the 16th edition of All India J P Atray Memorial Cricket Tournament to be played at Chandigarh, Panchkula and Mohali from September 17 to 30.

Players like Cheteshwar Pujara, Parthiv Patel, Wasim Jaffer and V R V Singh among others will be seen in action during the tournament. This was announced by Chander Shekhar, organising committee chairman, during a press conference held at Hotel Western Court, Sector 43, on Sunday. The 50-overs-a-side matches will be played at different venues at Chandigarh, Mohali and Panchkula. The final will be a day-night affair to be played at Punjab Cricket Association Stadium at Mohali on September 30.

PCA announce teams
The Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) Selection Committee announced PCC, PCA Colts and Rest of Punjab teams which will take part in the JP Atray Tournament and play a four-day match against Katoch Shield winners Chandigarh, respectively, from September 14 to 17 at Amritsar.

Sunil Saggi, Bhupinder Singh Sr. and Harvinder Singh were appointed coaches for PCA Colts, PCC and Rest of Punjab team, respectively. PCA Colts and PCC team will start their campaign in J.P.Atray Tournament on September 21. PCC will lock horns with CAB, while PCA Colts take on LIC Cricket Club.

Spacious media-box for WC
Meanwhile, during the PCA Executive Committee meeting held under IS Bindra, it was decided that an exclusive media-box would be built in the North Block in view of the 2011 World Cup matches for which administrative approval has been given. The new media-box will be more spacious and well-equipped.

It would accommodate 200 print mediapersons and also photographers, both TV & Radio commentators along with their back-up set ups. In addition to this, there would be a hall within the same area for pre-match and post-match conferences.

The Committee also approved the proposed increase in subsidy of districts and the increase in fees of umpires, match referees, scorers etc. The PCA members also condoled the demise of former BCCI chief Raj Singh Dungarpur. They also observed silence for two minutes in memory of the former cricket administrator.

XVth JP Atray Memorial Cricket Tournament

The XVth edition of the prestigious All India J.P. Atray Memorial Cricket Tournament was held from 17th September'2008 to 30th September'2008. In the past the tournament has been an ideal curtain raiser for the ensuing cricket season and a plethora of Test and Ranji cricketers have participated in it. Cricketers like Saurav Ganguly, Virender Sehwag, Yuvraj Singh and Harbhajan Singh were seen in action during the 15th All India JP Atray tournament, played in Chandigarh and Mohali.

The tournament, organised under the aegis of Punjab Cricket Association (PCA), was played on league-cum-knock out basis and the teams were divided into 4 pools. Top side from each pool entered into the semi-final stage.

All the matches of the tournament, last till September 30, were of 50 overs each innings and were played under the ICC Rules of One-day cricket.

The participating teams were Punjab Cricket Club, BPCL, Mumbai, St Bank of Hyderabad, HPCA Academy, ONGC-Delhi, Assam CA, St Bank of Mysore-Bangalore, Indian Oil Corp-Mumbai, MRF-Chennai, Moody ICL, MPCA XI, CM XI-Haryana, LIC Cricket Club, PCA Colts, RCA XI and India Cements Ltd-Chennai.

The matches were played at PCA Cricket Stadium at Mohali, Sector-16 Stadium in Chandigarh, DAV School (Chandigarh) and St John's School Cricket Stadium at Barwala.

The tourney presented Rs 1.50 lakhs to winners and Rs 60,000 to the runners-up, while the third and fourth position holder received Rs 30,000 and Rs 15,000 respectively

Nita Ambani cheers for her cricket team (21.09.09)

Chandigarh, Sept 21: Nita Ambani, the wife of Reliance Industries chairman Mukesh Ambani, is here to support her cricket team Reliance 1.

The team is playing in the ongoing J P Atray Tournament.

Addressing the media, Nita Ambani said she was happy to meet and support the players of her team.

"I am happy to be here in Chandigarh to support the Reliance 1 team playing in the J P Atray Tournament. I must compliment Atray for hosting this tournament for the last 16 years," she said.

Wicketkeeper Parthiv Patel captained Reliance 1 and Virendra Sehwag turned out as an opening batsman. Sehwag failed to open his account.

The J P Atray Tournament is being organized by the Punjab Cricket Association.
