ONGC Down Air India to Win the 17th All India J.P. Atray Memorial Cricket Tournament

In a pulsating final played at Tau Devi Lal Stadium, Sector 3, Panchkula, ONGC team came from behind to post the 6 wicket victory over arch rival Air India . They won the coveted trophy alongwith a cash prize of Rs. 1.75 lacs while Air India had to contend with Runners up trophy and a cash prize of Rs. 70,000/-.

Winning the toss Air India elected to bat and added 37 runs for the first wicket before opener Sachin Rana was run out for 19 by a fine throw from Radhey Shyam Gupta. The other opener Chandan Madan was also run out for 20 off 26 balls. Then a fruitful partnership of 84 runs between Skipper Mohd. Kaif AND Naman Sharma took the team’s total to 125 when Naman Sharma was cleaned up by Parveen Gupta for 46 off 58 balls studded with 2x4s and 2x6s. Mohd. Kaif also departed when he played an uppish stroke to be caught and bowled by Parminder Awana for 54 off 82 balls. Deepak Joon was the other main contributor with the bat as he scored 52 off 55 balls with 2x4s and 1x6. Parveen Gupta 2 for 38 was the main wicket taker for ONGC.

Replying ONGC were rocked in the first over when their opener M.Mudgil was castled by Rajat Bhatia without troubling the scorer. Then in form Sandeep Sharma and Tanmay Srivastava cobbled up 67 runs in the 2nd wicket before Sandeep Sharma was snapped by Mohd Kaif off Sanjay Badhwar for 34 off 56 balls inclusive of 5x4s. Tanmay Srivastava made 28. Another fruitful partnership for the 4th wicket between Radhey Shayam Gupta and Mayank Tehlan worth 86 took the total to 155 for 4 in 39.2 overs before Radheyshyam Gupta was snapped by wicket keeper Chandan Madan of Sanjay Badhwar on 45 off 66 balls with 3x4s and 1x6. Mayank Tehlan and Puneet Mehra then were associated in an unbeaten stand of 98 runs for the 5th wicket in 7.3 overs,
Mayank Tehlan remained unbeaten on 69 off 82 balls consisting of 4x4s and 2x6s while Puneet Mehra was unbeaten on 49 off 26 balls inclusive of 2x4s and 4 towering sixes which took the total to 233 for 4 in 46.5 overs. Sanjay Badhwar 2 for 34 was the most successful bowler for Air India.

ONGC won by 6 wickets. Mayank Tehlan was named LG Man of the Match. Mr.Naresh Gulati, IAS was the Chief Guest while Mr. I.S. Bindra, President, PCA and Mr. M.P. Pandove, Honorary Secretary, PCA were Guests of Honour. They gave away the Winners Trophy and a cash prize of Rs. 1.75 lacs of ONGC team while Runners Up and a cash prize of Rs.70,000/- was given to Air India Team. Sandeep Sharma won best batsman of the tournament award, Mr. Parminder Awana won the best bowlers award and S.Suresh Kumar won the player of the tournament award.

XVIIth ALL INDIA J.P. ATRAY MEMORIAL CRICKET TOURNAMENT

The 17th Edition of All India J.P. Atray Memorial Cricket Tournament will be held from 15th to 24th September,2010 at Sector 16 Cricket Stadium, Chandigarh, Tau Devi Lal Cricket Stadium Sector -3 Panchkula, DAV School Sector 8 Chandigarh, LIC Cricket Academy GMHS Sector 26 Chandigarh, St.John School Sector 26 Chandigarh and Dhruv Pandove Cricket Stadium Patiala. The tournament will be played under the auspices of Punjab Cricket Association and is recognized by the BCCI. It is the curtain raiser before the start of the domestic season. This time around it will be followed by the Australian Team’s tour of India and will give a great chance to fringe players to stake their claim for the National Team.

According to Mr. Sushil Kapoor, Organising Secretary of the Tournament 16 leading teams from all over the country are taking part in the tournament, which will be played on league cum knock out basis. All the matches will be of 50 overs each innings. PCA Panel Umpires and Scorers will be detailed for the matches. S.G. Test Cricket balls will be used. The winners will get a cash prize of Rs. 1.75 lacs alongwith winners trophy, Runners up will get a cash prize of Rs.70,000/- with runners up trophy. The two losing semifinalists will get a cash prize of Rs.20,000/- each. There will be awards for each Man of the Match. Best Batsman, Best Bowler and Player of the Tournament will be awarded during the finals of the tournament. The tournament will be played under the ICC Rules of One Day Cricket.


The teams have been divided in four pools and top team from each pool will qualify for the Semi finals. Reliance – I winners of last year along with BSNL, BPCL & PCC are in Pool-A, Last years Runners Up Indian Oil Corporation, All India FCI, Indian Railway and India Cements are placed in Pool – B, All India Electricity Board, Indian Income Tax, Bishnoi Cricket Club and ONGC Delhi are in Pool-C while Pool D consists of PCA Colts, DY Patil Academy Mumbai, LIC Cricket Club Chandigarh and Air India Delhi. This year India Cement Chennai, Bishnoi Cricket Club and DY Patil Academy Mumbai are the new entrants.


M/s Pearls Infrastructure Projects Limited are the main sponsor of the tournament and M/s Preet Land Promotors and Developers, Mount Shivalik, India Bulls and Coca Cola are the Co-sponsors of the tournament. This year four matches including a semi-final have been slated for Dhruv Pandove Cricket Stadium, Patiala because of the Australian Team’s arrival in Chandigarh from 20th September,2010.


The inaugural ceremony of the tournament will be held at Cricket Stadium, Sector 16 on 15th September,2010 with a match between All India Electricity Board and Indian Income Tax Pune. Mr. KJS Toor, Director Pearls Infrastructure Projects Limited will inaugurate the tournament. All matches will start at 9.15 a.m. The final of the tournament will be held at Tau Devilal Stadium, Sector 3, Panchkula on 24th September,2010 and this time around it will be a day affair.

The tournament will have lot of keen and contested matches and many participating teams like Indian Oil Corporation, India Cements, BPCL, Indian Income Tax , All India Electricity Board, Air India will be renewing their rivalry which was witnessed in the just concluded BCCI Corporate Cup for Raj Singh Dungarpur Trophy. As a matter of fact the winners of Corporate Indian Oil and Runners up India Cement are placed in the same pool i.e. Pool-B. The tournament will have many renowned players various outfits. The list includes Ajay Jadeja, Akash Chopra, Manoj Tiwari, Ashok Dinda, Wriddiman Saha, Abhishek Junjunwala, Amol Majumdar, Pankaj Dharmani, Reetinder Sodhi, Munaf Patel, Gautam Gambhir, Parthiv Patel, Mohd.Kaif, Ravinder Jadeja, Yusuf Pathan, Wasim Jaffar, Nilesh Kulkarani, and few upcoming young players from Punjab.
